Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised an sole daughter of her grandmother. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating her school, she went to Temple University. While working two jobs and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She hoped she would become an English high school teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit school after three years of studies and was a teachers' aide. Being a poet, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. In a Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. She then secured collaborations, including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
